Why You Should Visit Sunday River This Winter

Getting There From Boston

If you are looking to go skiing this year, definitely check out Sunday River. It about a 3.5-hour drive from Boston, so it makes a great weekend or even mid-week trip. On the drive there, you can stop in Portland, ME, for a bite to eat or just drive straight there. Once you get to Newry, there are a few places near Sunday River that are open for dining. I’ll also mention Maine is very safe and has many restrictions due to Covid. So be sure to stay up to date on all the precautions you should take when visiting Maine.

Enjoy all the pretty view as you drive north!

What To Do If You Are a Beginner (Like Me)

Even if you are a beginner skier like me, Sunday River is such a fun place! The environment is excellent for whatever you would like. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend their snow sports school. They have group lessons as well as private lessons for skiing and snowboarding. I started off with an hour and a half group lesson. My instructor had been teaching there for about 30 years! He was a real pro! He made me feel confident and comfortable with all the techniques we learned.

The views from the slopes are breathtaking, you really can feel relaxed and excited while you ski! Thank you Champion and Patagonia for the terrific ski gear!

Where To Stay

We stayed at the Grand Summit Hotel, which is right on the mountain, another spot with amazing views! The rooms are perfect for getting cozy after a long day of skiing, and they even have an outdoor pool, and hot tub! They also have Camp and the Last Run Room for dining. In addition, there are a few cute apres-ski bard around the area to check out, one of which is called Matterhorn Ski Bar. They have great after ski comfort food to get you ready for the next day of skiing.

Everything Is Contactless

Another great thing about Sunday River is that they are very safe and have many precautious due to Covid 19. Masks must be worn at all times unless eating or drinking. The lift tickets are straightforward to use since they have sensors that sense the card in your coat pocket right before you get on the lift. They also only have one household go on the lift at once. If you are not with a member of your household, you can go alone. In addition, they do not let you store a much inside the lodge as they used to, so try to gear up at your car and leave everything you do not need in the car. This also reduces contact and increases social distancing.

I’m already trying to plan my next visit to Sunday River and am missing these incredible views!
